Negotiating rights clearance to reproduce existing works in new media
products is a major issue for producers, researchers and multi-media
developers.
These courses will be led by Richard McCracken (Head of Rights) and
Madeleine
Gilbart of the Open University, which has over 25 years of experience in
obtaining rights in third-party materials for re-use in broadcasts,
audio-visual materials, computer based publications and books. Richard
and
Madeleine are joint authors of Buying and Clearing Rights, published by
Routledge.
Aimed at producers, researchers, academic authors and courseware
developers,
the day will fully explore the practicalities of rights clearance:
What is copyright?
How do rights differ from copyright?
Broadcast and video rights.
Computer based systems: software licensing, network distribution.
Multi-media.
Administering the clearance process.
Workshop session.
There will be opportunities for participants to discuss their own rights
clearance issues; past, present and future.

Greg Newton-Ingham, Project Manager of the joint BFI/BUFVC/JISC
Imagination/Universities Network Pilot, leads these courses designed to
look
at the problems and issues relating to the digitisation of moving images
for
online delivery from server technology. The courses will include a
general
overview of analogue video formats and standards. There will be
discussion
of video compression and file formats and large-screen demonstrations of
MPEG
and AVI files. There will also be a general overview and discussion
concerning copyright issues relating to online delivery of moving pictures.
Intended audience: Audio-visual service providers, computer services
staff,
librarians and those involved in exploring new forms of delivery of moving
pictures to specialist audiences.
