An Invitation to Day Conference
Shared Solidarities: traditional politics and the new social movements
Sheffield Hallam University: Thursday, 10 September 2015, 10-4.30pm at the city centre site.
The conference is hosted jointly by MeCCSA Social Movements Network and The Culture Communication and Computing Institute at Sheffield Hallam University. It is free to all; lunch and refreshments are provided but everyone who wishes to attend is asked to register beforehand through the link below.
The aim of the conference is to reconsider political organisations in the light of new social movements; what they could have in common and how they might work together. Involvement in social movements and single issue politics is often said to have replaced wider collective action and downgraded the importance of traditional political affiliation. The conference considers whether this is actually the case. Or is it rather that progressive parties and trade unions are adapting to meet the challenge of the new politics? And what might social movements and single issue networks learn from the older organisations of socialism and social democracy? How do social and traditional media portray these social and political formations? Do they offer a representation of shared solidarities or are they pitted against one another?
The 'Shared Solidarities' day will examine all these questions. Invited speakers include representatives from The Orgreave Truth and Justice Campaign, Sheffield Trades Council, The Fast Food Campaign, Derbyshire Unemployment Centre, and representatives from anti-racist and diasporic movements, Unite Community, and Citizens UK.
The day will be organised around three key strands:
· Lessons of de-industrialisation
· Social movements and alliances
· New strategies of unionisation
Please register by Monday, 7 September 2015 for room accommodation and catering purposes.
