STUDYING AT THE WARBURG INSTITUTE
The Warburg Institute is one of the world's leading centres for studying the interaction of ideas, images and society. It is dedicated to the survival and transmission of culture across time and space, with special emphasis on the afterlife of antiquity. The resources of the Warburg are especially geared to students interested in interdisciplinary study.

An introduction to two major medieval and early modern sciences, focusing on their development in the Islamic world and Europe. The course will pay special attention to their projections as knowledge derived from the legendary father of the occult sciences, Hermes.

Course tutor: Paul Taylor (Curator, Warburg Institute Photographic Collection)
Drawing on a wide variety of works from around the world, from African ancestor figures to modern photographs, this course argues that images can be said to have meanings, and that the ways in which they acquire meanings vary and require careful analysis.
