Hi Jude,

If you're looking to learn Python or Javascript, I recommend the BBC Microbit: https://www.microbit.org/ and you get the bonus of playing with kit if you want to too (or you can just use the emulator built in to the website).

The site has loads of projects for kids: https://www.microbit.org/projects/- working my way through these is how I learnt my (basic) python!

Good luck and have fun 😊

Best

Izzy

Subject: Learning to Code - Recommendations?

Hello,

I want to learn to code.

Does anyone have any recommendations for online courses? I've found Manchester Codes which offers a 100% online coding course (https://www.manchestercodes.com/) and a free 'Introduction to Programming' course which I'm going to try, but keen to hear of anything else there for coding beginners.

Thanks,

Jude.

Are you looking for any particular language, or a more general “principles of coding” type thing?

Hi Jude,

big thumbs up for the "Carpentry" series. I ran a couple of workshops when I was at SGUL and they seemed to be quite effective for people with no previous experience of coding but with a good level of general numeracy (senior academics, etc).

Zooming out a little, I'd also recommend setting a goal – *what* do you want to code and *why*? Give yourself a project, which might be something related to your work (a data analysis, an interactive data visualization, a website, etc) and you will get through a lot more by navigating the obvious frustration that comes from the process :)

Or you could try and replicate something you've seen out there, maybe on a smaller scale. For example, the several years of BL Labs awards (e.g.

https://data.bl.uk/bl_labs_awards/index.html) could be a good starting point.

Goood luck!

Giuseppe

Subject: Survey for a 3D data service in the Arts and Humanities

Dear colleagues,

As part of the AHRC-funded project “Scoping a data service for complex 3D data in the arts and humanities” (https://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/3ddataservice), we want to gather user requirements for a data service which successfully underpins and supports research in the Arts and Humanities. The results of the survey will input into the design of a national data infrastructure that strengthens UK researchers as global players.

The survey can be found here: https://survey.chws.brighton.domains/index.php/862148?lang=en (it takes 10-15 minutes to complete the survey).

Please feel free to forward the link of the survey to other colleagues or interested parties.

Sincerely,

Myrsini

Hi Jude, depending on what depth you're looking for, FutureLearn has 'light' courses to get you going. And they're free. Have a look:
