Hi Jane
Thoughts below:
>> My concerns are about the terms of such a licence.
I'd have a look at the big players - for example the BBC, as Paul suggested
in his email. Others:
Yahoo API: http://developer.yahoo.net/terms/
Amazon API: http://tinyurl.com/dh9ls
Google API: http://www.google.com/apis/api_terms.html
BBC Backstage: http://backstage.bbc.co.uk/archives/2005/01/terms_of_use.html
Creative Commons might be worth looking at as Nick suggests
>> What do list members think? Should the 24HM be supplying data to OS in
this fashion?
Yes, absolutely
>> Of course they want it for free but is it good business to give it to
them?
Yes
>> Also, if we give it to OS what about others? Should it be freely
available to all sector partners? Where do you draw a line?
Nowhere - make the information freely available to all - sector, non-sector,
individual.
Why?
1) The information contained in it can be obtained from other places for
free anyway - this would simply be a handy aggregation of the data - which
is easier to use than browsing through the 24hr Museum website;
2) The people who benefit are 24hr Museum (traffic, profile, brand) and the
museum sector (drives traffic to our sites, both virtual and "real");
3) anyone who consumes the service and then re-displays it is doing a free
marketing job for us;
4) see previous emails re. developers wanting good content sources that they
can then use to provide innovative services - we might be suprised by the
ideas that this kind of information could generate
>> I see our data as one of our key assets as a business, in a way rather
like one of our collections so I am mindful about safeguarding its value and
don' want to see it exploited for commercial gain
As long as you build this into the terms (Yahoo: "You shall not...sell,
lease, or sublicense the Yahoo! APIs or access thereto or derive income from
the use or provision of the Yahoo! APIs, whether for direct commercial or
monetary gain or otherwise") this shouldn't be a problem.
You could also force consumers of the feed to put a link with text such as
"Powered by 24HrMuseum" - another way of marketing/branding/traffic
driving...Yahoo do this, too.
