I'm not well-up on RFID, but don't the gates work on generating radio
frequency electromagnetic waves, and then detecting a response from the
chip in (eg) your book? If so, they'll detect things that are near them
in all directions, including above - like when you're playing with iron
filings and magnets, the filings line up all around and beyond the
magnet.
Plus 1800 mm is 5 foot 11 so even if your punters are all 6 foot 5 tall,
5'11" is still above their shoulder height. They'd need to be really
good at throwing to get the book on the right trajectory to stay above
the gate and come down at the far end without hitting the ceiling or far
wall and bouncing down into detection range again.
I don't know about Simon's CCTV system, but the video tape one we have
is set to switch on when it detects someone in movement range of the
gate, and then records for a set length of time. If nobody comes in, it
doesn't record so we don't have 48 hours of nothing happening to look
through.

I'm not sure that this is always a flaw - gates too close to a ceiling
full of wiring, for instance, might be going off annoyingly a lot of the
time...
We tested our gates and though they don't reach the ceiling, the area of
air they're detecting over means there's only a small chance of people
finding a gap with our particular (3M) configuration. We are certainly
not finding a lot of book loss, even without CCTV (Trust decision not to
cover us here) and we have lots of examples of books detected near the
gates at night & weekends and then left inside the library.

Subject: Self issue / RFID / security gates etc
Hello All
There's been quite a lot of discussion on this recently with first my
enquiry, then Donna's, so thanks for all of your replies.
I'm getting a quote from 3M, but I've just noticed that their gates are
a standard 1800mm high. As we have a 24 hour library, this means anyone
could throw a book over the top to avoid detection, if they were alone
(we have CCTV, but it doesn't act as a great deterrent, and seems
impractical to search back through for entire weekends, for instance).
To cut a long story short, does anyone know of any higher gates on the
market, or systems without this flaw?
Kind Regards
Simon Alberici
