Apologies for cross posting
Yes friends it is ten years since Dolly the Sheep was brought into this
world. Ian Wilmut became a household name that day. Mary Ann Liebert,
publisher of "Cloning and Stem Cells" the journal which Wilmut edits
celebrates that fact with a special issue. Now, read on............
10th Anniversary of Cloning Landmark Celebrated in Cloning and Stem Cells
Journal
New Rochelle, NY, March 27, 2007-The birth of Dolly the sheep, the first
cloned adult mammal, in February 1997, sparked a scientific and
socio-cultural revolution, and now, 10 years later, the historic,
scientific, and medical ramifications of this landmark event are celebrated
and scrutinized in a series of compelling essays in the Spring 2007 (Volume
9, Number 1) issue of Cloning and Stem Cells, a peer-reviewed journal
published by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. The entire issue is available free
online at www.liebertpub.com/clo

Ian Wilmut, Ph.D., Director of the Centre for Regenerative Medicine at the
Queen's Medical Research Institute, University of Edinburgh, who led the
research team that cloned Dolly while working at the Roslin Institute, is
Editor-in-Chief of Cloning and Stem Cells. Wilmut invited a panel of
renowned scientists and opinion leaders to contribute essays on topics
ranging from current applications of cloning technology to
xenotransplantation and the psychosocial aspects of the potential for human
cloning. In addition, this special issue includes the re-publication of Dr.
Wilmut's groundbreaking paper in Nature announcing Dolly's birth and
describing the scientific methodology behind reproductive cloning.
"It is important to be reminded that before Dolly's birth, cloning of adult
mammals was considered by many distinguished biologists to be impossible,"
says Dr. Wilmut.
Views from opinion leaders in the field are captured in provocative essays.
Keith Campbell reminisces about the research effort that led to Dolly's
birth and his pioneering work since developing new cloning techniques. Jim
Robl describes the work underway at Hematech using cloning technology to
produce human antibodies in cattle. In an essay entitled, "Targeted Genetic
Modification: Xenotransplantation and Beyond," Randy Prather presents the
status of efforts to make genetic modifications in pigs and generate organs
for transplantation.
Kevin Eggan writes of his group's leading-edge research to produce embryonic
stem cells from cloned embryos. In "Novel Approaches to Epigenetic
Reprogramming of Somatic Cells," Philippe Collas and Runhild Gammelsaeter
explain the technique they developed to transfer genetic factors from one
cell type to another.
Psychiatrist Stephen Levick explores the social and psychological issues a
cloned child might face. When the Raelians made their media-shattering
announcement that they had cloned a child, Bernard Siegel, author of
"Reflections on the Cloning Case," initiated the legal action requiring the
group to prove its claims, and subsequently founded the Genetics Policy
Institute and leads a broad-based campaign to promote and fund stem cell
research in the U.S.
Cloning and Stem Cells is an authoritative peer-reviewed journal published
quarterly in print and online that focuses on understanding developmental
plasticity and defining the molecular mechanisms that regulate
differentiation or dedifferentiation of nuclei and cells. Tables of contents
