I need to correct the earlier message I sent out on the I-S Mailbase about
this. I'm afraid that the distributors, LBS, as some of you have already
discovered and informed me, are NOT making the books available to anyone who
orders them. The price they (and I) quoted is in fact an author's special
discount that applies only to me and my co-editor Matthew Reynolds.
Orion/Dent did not make this clear in their original letter to me but have
now confirmed it.
Can I ask Mailbase members therefore NOT to direct any purchase orders to
the distributors. The publishers have no objection to my buying up copies
and selling them on to Mailbase members (see attached message below). If you
are still interested in purchasing the text at the special price (£3 + £2
postage for up to 5 copies within UK; overseas rate depends on destination)
please contact Sue Carr in the UCL Italian Dept Office (and not me), giving
her your name and address and number of copies required. Sue has agreed to
handle the onward sale of the books from here. Her direct line is (+44)
(0)20 7679 7784; fax (+44)(0)20 7209 0638; email: [log in to unmask]
Sue will wait till she gets some purchase requests before ordering the books
from LBS but after that the despatch from here should be quick.
I apologise for the inadvertent misinformation and the incovenience it has
caused.

>>Dear Professor Forgacs,
>>
>>I'm sorry for the confusion. It was LBS who informed me that students had
>>been ringing them up - they took the Italian Studies mailbase members for
>>students.
>>
>>I have run your suggestion by my divisional managing director, but I'm
>>afraid we are not able to supply copies to the mailbase members at a special
>>price directly from LBS. The remainder offer was made specificlly to you by
>>virtue of addressing the letter to you, and all remaining stock will be sold
>>to bookshops at a discounted price by our agents in the few months after 30
>>June. We have no way of knowing which bookshops these will be.
>>
>>Informally speaking, we would have no objection if you were to purchase
>>copies on behalf of the mailbase members, but if, as you say, you are
>>unwilling and unable to take this on yourself, then the situation cannot be
>>altered. I'm afraid LBS will have to turn away all private callers who wish
>>to purchase at a remainder price apart from Dr Reynolds and yourself. I
>>would greatly appreciate if if you could e-mail the Italian studies mailbase
>>to inform them of the misunderstanding.
>>
>>Yours sincerely,
>>Christine
