Here in Somerset we have located 3 (and possibly 4) cast iron markers for the London to Penzance telegraph cable of 1901. They have an ER crown at the top, below which is cast "ft in", below which is a blank box presumably for the depth (or distance from the post?) below which is a double line with an upward pointing arrow (perhaps where to measure the depth from?). Superficially they resemble a bench mark on a cast iron post.
Two questions:
Does anyone else have record of these (i.e. are they rare)? They seem to be heading towards Bristol rather than direct to London.
Secondly, there doesn't seem to be a Thesaurus term for them! Ed?
