Workshop
Making Residence Abroad Work: approaches beyond language
learning
Friday 24th November 2000 CILT, London
Preparation for residence abroad for students has been extensively
developed in recent work by three FDTL (Fund for the Development
of Teaching and Learning) Languages projects, but it has been
recognised that the materials and methodologies developed and the
good practices identified can be equally useful for students in other
disciplines for whom study abroad forms part of their course. While
these students may not have language learning as their principal
motivation for spending time abroad they will certainly find
themselves involved in cross-cultural exchanges and will encounter
the many practical challenges of living, studying or working abroad.
This workshop, therefore, will draw upon the work done by the LARA
(Learning and Residence Abroad), Residence Abroad Project and
Interculture projects and is intended to help staff prepare their
students for residence abroad and to better integrate that
experience into their course as a whole. It will also consider issues
relating to intercultural learning, accreditation and institutional policy.
