ASIAN CONFERENCE on UNSATURATED SOILS
FROM THEORY TO PRACTICE
18-19 May 2000, Singapore
The NTU-PWD Geotechnical Research Centre, Nanyang Technological University,
Singapore is organising an Asian Conference on Unsaturated Soils (UNSAT-ASIA
2000) with the theme From Theory to Practice. The conference has been given
official support by the International Society of Soil Mechanics and
Geotechnical Engineering Technical Committee TC6 and will be held in
Singapore on 18-19 May 2000. The aim of the Asian Conference on Unsaturated
Soils is to encourage a transition from theoretical frameworks of
unsaturated soil behaviour to actual application in practical situations.
Asia faces many problems relating to unsaturated soil behaviour including
expansive soils, collapsing soils and tropical residual soils. A major
factor in applying our theories to these practical problems will be the
ability to measure suctions in the field, as well as in the laboratory.
Therefore the measurement of suction will be an area that the conference
will address. Another focus will be reports on testing carried out in the
laboratory or the field where suctions have been measured. Numerical
modelling of unsaturated soil behaviour, flow analysis, mass transport and
considerations of moisture flux boundary conditions are other important
areas that will be considered. Papers describing practical applications and
case studies will be particularly welcome.
TOPICS:
* Fundamentals and theoretical advances
* Testing techniques and field measurements, measurement of suction
* Engineering properties of unsaturated soils: Volume change
(shrinkage, swelling, collapse); shear strength; permeability and flow
properties
* Engineering applications and case studies: Foundations; Slopes;
Excavations; Dams; Roads
* Modelling and numerical analysis
* Flow analysis and mass transport
* Evaluation and application of moisture flux boundary conditions
