This is possibly a naïve question but I would like advice on the comparability of total brain volume correction techniques in different software packages. I am commenting on a paper that uses Freesurfer for cortical parcellation and FIRST for subcortical segmentation. Initial observations of sex differences in cortical and subcortical volumes (all M>F) are reported to be differentially affected by subsequent brain volume corrections - with respect to cortical zones, M>F differences remain (though effect size attenuated); with respect to subcortical structures, virtually all sex differences disappeared. Any comment/advice gratefully received.
