WHAT I SHOULD HAVE SAID

I SAID: Design Research News started out as a stop-gap newsletter for the
Design Research Society. At the time, a paper-based newsletter to members
had become too onerous (printing, putting into envelopes, applying stamps)
and I decided to replace it with a digital version on condition that it was
available to all those interested, not just DRS members. Over the years DRN
became fully independent and saw its readership steadily grow to the
current 9,500.

I ALSO SAID: I have been compiling DRN for a few years now, and the time
has come for me to handover to another editor.

I SHOULD HAVE SAID: If you would like more information with no obligation
please email me at: [log in to unmask] for some idea of how it's
done.

kind regards
David

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ATTENDING [TO] FUTURES - Open Access Book Launch

I am happy to announce the book launch of ,Attending [to] Futures. Matters
of Politics in Design Education, Research, Practice".
This publication proceeds the conference of the same name that took place
at KISD (Koeln International School of Design) in November 2021.

Conference website:

https://attendingtofutures.de/

Published by adocs, A[t]F will available as a print version very soon, but
is already published Open Access and ready to be downloaded for free here:

https://adocs.de/de/buecher/design-theorie-praxis-open-accessebooks/
attending-futures-matters-politics-design-education-research-practice

If "design" is the lens through which we glimpse into possible futures,
this volume asks: What are the futures we are capable of imagining?
Self-reflexively engaging their own experiences and work, authors in this
volume interrogate design in all its convoluted modalities: as activism,
practice, discipline, way of knowing, field of study and set of objects.

NEW BOOK FROM MIT

New book from the MIT Press: Racism Untaught: Revealing and Unlearning
Racialized Design
by Lisa Elzey Mercer and Terresa Moses

Foreword by renowned designer Cheryl D. Miller

https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262048583/racism-untaught/

A powerful and proven guidebook that shows organizations how to recognize
racism in designed artifacts, systems, and experiences--and how to replace
them with anti-racist design solutions.

Anti-racist design interventions can be difficult. Well-intentioned
conversations can fuel tensions, activate racialized trauma, and lead to
misunderstandings, especially in spaces not typically focused on diversity,
equity, and inclusion. Even when progress is made, white supremacy culture
can resurface. We need anti-racist guidelines and approaches that lay bare
racialized systems of oppression and fundamentally disrupt their
replication. In Racism Untaught, Lisa E. Mercer and Terresa Moses, two
veteran anti-racist educators, deliver this exact approach.

Mercer and Moses provide a step-by-step guide to anti-racist interventions
in academic, business, and community settings that benefits all
participants. Adapted from their successful workshop series and filled with
concrete examples and ample case studies, their book teaches participants
how to analyze design--and reimagine racialized artifacts, systems, and
experiences guided by anti-oppressive principles. They demonstrate how to
examine positionality within the context of racism and oppression; help us
understand how design can reinforce and perpetuate oppression; and reveal
the unique relationship among equity, ethics, and responsibility that
constitutes the core value of an anti-racist design discipline. In Racism
Untaught, Mercer and Moses provide the framework we need to unlearn
racialized design practices and move more generatively toward collective
liberation.

"This groundbreaking book dives deep into the hidden biases embedded within
design practices and offers a transforative approach to dismantling
systemic racism. Taking readers on a journey through the history of design,
Mercer and Moses showcase how racialized design perpetuates inequality and
exclusion in our society and challenges readers to confront their own
biases and actively engage in unlearning these harmful design patterns.
Racism Untaught includes practical strategies that aim to empower
individuals and communities to create a more inclusive and equitable
future. It is a must-read for designers, activists, and anyone committed to
dismantling racism in design."--Metropolis

HIGHLIGHTS FROM 33RD WORLD DESIGN ASSEMBLY IN TOKYO
Tokyo (Japan), 30 October 2023 -

World Design Organization (WDO)(R) has concluded its 33rd World Design
Assembly(TM), which took place from 27-29 October 2023 in Tokyo (Japan).
Hosted in collaboration with WDO Promotional Member Japan Institute of
Design Promotion (JDP), the three-day hybrid event welcomed participants
in-person, as well as via live telecast from across the globe to exchange
insights on the theme of Design Beyond.

A Research and Education Forum attended by 355 participants on the first
day examined the theme through a series of paper and poster presentations.
Keynote speakers included Ayse Birsel, Co-founder, Birsel + Seck; Jian Liu,
Associate Dean at Tsinghua University; and Katja Forbes, Design Leader &
DEI Director at the Data Visualisation Society.

More than 600 in-person participants attended the second day to hear
inspiring keynotes from Tim Ingold, Professor Emeritus at the University of

HAZARDING DESIGN - Risks and consequences of design

Call for papers:
Deadline 15. December 2023

we are pleased to announce the CALL for Paper for the annual conference of
the German Design Society for Design Theory and Research in Lucerne,
Switzerland:

DGTF annual conference 26.-27.04.2024 in Lucerne/Switzerland

Hazarding Design - Risks and consequences of design

At least since the modern era, the design profession has been guided by a
belief in its power to change society (Dorrestijn & Verbeek, 2023, p. 46).
In doing so, it sees itself fundamentally as a means of bringing about
positive change through applied creativity (Simon, 1996, p.111). Ideas
about what counts as positive change and how to achieve it, however, have
shifted over time. While designers at the beginning of the 20th century
still believed in the standardized satisfaction of human needs by means of
technical-social engineering, reality proved to be resistant to such
planning procedures. Societal, ecological, economic and social problems
hardly follow causal chains that can be broken by good design - whatever
that may be. Instead, we increasingly find ourselves facing down "Wicked
Problems" (Rittel & Webber, 1973, p. 160 ff.) that arise in highly complex
systems, propagated by heterogeneous actors - both human and non-human -
and characterized by asymmetrical power relations.

Design, in turn, is by no means a neutral, universally applicable tool;
it's a situated "socio-material practice" (Mareis, Paim, p. 11 f.) strongly
influenced by white, male worldviews, which inscribes itself in stakeholder
networks and societies (ibid., p. 11). Thus, design interventions
inevitably create new constellations and thus unforeseen consequences.
Design is more than a concrete answer to static problems, deeper than a
quick fix. Designers produce meanings (Krippendorff, 2006), find themselves
enmeshed in the negotiation processes of actor networks (Latour, 1996) and
develop contributions for new ways of coexisting in the field of tension
between pragmatism and utopia (Fezer, 2013).

These considerations lead to the central questions of the 2024 DGTF
conference. What effects does design actually have? How does design achieve
an impact and how do we deal with the consequences of design?

We invite you to discuss these questions at the 21st Annual Conference of
the German Society for Design Theory and Research (DGTF) at the University
of Applied Science Lucerne, Switzerland and look forward to your thoughts
and projects on the following topics:

Impact measurement: How does design work? What established forms of impact
measurement exist, which schools of thought and understandings do they stem
from?

Achievement of objectives: Who determines when design is successful? How
and by whom are goals and ideas of success negotiated, and what role do
competition and benchmarking play in this process

Design impact assessment: What are desired impacts of design and where do
the unforeseen consequences begin

Stakeholder engagement: Who and what does design affect? Do the actual
stakeholders of the design play a role in the development of targets,
evaluation methods and evaluation itself? How does this role change in
networks with a wide range of stakeholders and species

Error culture: What does a positive error culture mean in design as a
profession driven by perfectionism and success? How do we move away from
the dualism of error vs. success toward an understanding of open learning
processes and what role do agility and culture play? How are failures
evaluated, addressed and communicated

Communication of impact: How can we communicate and present the impact of
design so that it is (finally) understood as more than a cosmetic
profession?

We invite researchers and practitioners from all disciplines and sectors to
submit papers to the 2024 DGTF Annual Conference. As DGTF, we are concerned
with research that addresses, critiques, describes and applies design in
its broadest sense, and we particularly value interdisciplinary and
transdisciplinary approaches. This includes empirical, theoretical,
conceptual and exploratory research contributions as well as project
contributions or applications from practice. We are accepting contributions
in German or English.

The conference team aims to facilitate a lively conference that provides
ample space for professional exchange and community building while
showcasing the academic quality of design research. We provide five
different formats in which contributions can be submitted. All submissions
go through a double-blind review process.

Following the conference, an open-access publication will be released
(ISBN). All full papers can be revised up to a maximum of six weeks after
the conference. Authors of all other conference formats are invited to
prepare their contribution as a full paper for publication up to a maximum
of six weeks after the conference. We reserve the right of refusal.

IN THE THICK OF IMAGES

In the Thick of Images: Law, History, and the Visual Conference

Monday 10 + Tuesday 11 June 2024 University of Lucerne

CALL FOR PAPERS

"Suppose that whatever we've done, felt, and thought has always happened in
the thick of images." (Anand Pandian, Reel Word: An Anthropology of
Creation)

The 'visual turn' has long been turning in critical and cultural studies of
law (see Douzinas & Nead 1999). In the past twenty-five years, a growing
body of scholarship has evolved that emphasises law's "constitutive
imbrication" (Crawley 2020) with an array of visual forms, and elaborates
on the ways in which images "shape and transform legal life" (Sarat et al.
2005). Weaving together an eclectic set of theories, concepts, methods and
materials, such studies refuse thin readings of images as merely
illustrative of law, and invite us to think more deeply about their
ideological and visual operations - about the meanings they carry and make
available, about their material presence and affective effects, and about
the cultural-political and cultural-legal work they perform across their
multiple contexts of production, circulation and reception.

Much of this scholarship focuses on the contemporary conjuncture of law and
visuality. Yet law's imbrication with the visual is not exclusive to the
present; law has always lived, happened and mattered "in the thick of
images". This is the starting point for our two-day conference, which seeks
to explicitly foreground historical and historicist work on law and the
visual. Situated at the disciplinary crossroads of law, history, visual
cultural studies, art history, film and photography studies, In the Thick
of Images invites multiple viewpoints and approaches to converge on ways of
negotiating the entanglements of law, history and the visual - in various
contexts, scales and timeframes. Link to the full Call for Papers and other
information *Keynote speakers to be announced shortly

ANNOUNCING THE PROTOTYPING ACROSS DISCIPLINES JOURNAL

We invite you to submit a paper for the inaugural issue of Prototyping
Across Disciplines, a peer-reviewed, trans-disciplinary, open-source
design journal. We welcome submissions from researchers who have used
prototyping to contribute new expert knowledge or insight to their field,
whether that is research located within the sciences, social sciences,
humanities, engineering, computing science, fine art, design, or any other
discipline.

The intention of the inaugural issue is to highlight the ways in which
prototyping is used:

- As part of a sequential process in order to support the construction of
new knowledge or understanding and resulting in either new, valid theories
either displacing old theories or else filling in their gaps;

- To help construct valid examinations of an object of study from different
perspectives or lenses where the understanding is enriched by prototyping;

- As part of field research; and - To produce new knowledge.

By learning how prototyping is being done in various disciplines, those
already involved in prototyping will be better equipped to engage in
interdisciplinary collaboration, while those who are not yet active in the
use of prototyping in their own fields may find inspiration to begin.

ACM IMX CONFERENCE '24
Call for submissions for the WiP track

Here comes the call for submissions for the Work-in-Progress track of the
ACM IMX conference '24. The conference will take place in Stockholm, Sweden
on June 12-14 2024.

Below are the important dates and shortened version of the call. For more
information, please visit the website: https://imx.acm.org/2024/. We are
looking forward to your submissions!

IMPORTANT DATES
- PCS opens early February 2024
- Submission deadline: March 21, 2024 (AoE)
- Decision Notification: April 30, 2024
- Camera Ready Submission: May 10, 2024

The ACM International Conference on Interactive Media Experiences (IMX) is
the leading international conference for presentation and discussion of
research into interactive media experiences. It brings together researchers
and practitioners from a wide range of disciplines, from human-computer
interaction, multimedia engineering and design, to media studies, media
psychology and sociology.

IMX 2024 will be held in Stockholm, Sweden, from June 12 to 14, 2024. The
theme of the conference is Exploring Archipelago of Ideas: Crafting and
Generating Immersive Experiences

The concept of "Archipelago of Ideas" draws its inspiration from the
Stockholm archipelago and its harmonious ecosystem of interconnected
islands. In much the same way, this suggests a future where immersive
experiences are seamlessly linked, forming a cohesive and immersive
narratives for participants. Just as Stockholm's archipelago offers diverse
and interconnected natural beauty, the "Archipelago of Ideas" envisions a
world where ideas and technologies come together to generate experiences.
This embraces the range from generative to hand crafted experiences,
converging on creativity, and the fluidity of experience, and the
interconnectedness of innovation.

We encourage researchers, students and practitioners to submit
Work-in-Progress (WiP) papers based on their recent viewpoints, new
discoveries, and early-stage design and development in disciplines that are
in line with the areas of interest of ACM IMX. The WiP track is intended
for thought-provoking and out of the box ideas, possibly with early proofs
of concept or prototypes, as well as position papers.

The WiP session is geared towards early career researchers, but also caters
to seasoned scholars for the presentation of unfinished projects. The WiP
track thus provides a unique opportunity for exchanging brave new ideas,
for receiving feedback on projects currently in progress and for fostering
collaborations. We thus encourage submissions that are not merely a report
of work done but an input for discussing with fellow researchers at the
conference.

Accepted submissions will be presented as a short (1-minute) video
presentation and a physical poster at the conference. Authors of accepted
WiP papers are also invited to bring a demo. The WiP posters will be
presented as part of the conference. The accepted WiP papers will be
included in conference proceedings (indexed in the ACM Digital Library).

THE IMPACT OF GENERATIVE AI ON HUMAN CREATIVITY

Call For Papers:

Special issue of the Journal AI & Society
(https://www.springer.com/journal/146): The Impact of Generative AI on
Human Creativity.

The rapid rise of generative AI technologies in applications of human
creative practice - including visual art, illustration, cinema, writing,
performance and music - has raised both opportunities and questions
regarding the future of human and machine creativity, and more broadly
around human culture. These issues span the conceptual (e.g. what roles
will AI technologies fulfil in future creative practices?), ethical (e.g.
issues of "style theft" and use of artist's work as training data), legal
(e.g. questions of authorship and copyright) and creative (e.g. does AI
have its own aesthetic?).

We invite submissions for this Special Issue of AI & Society that expands
critical scholarly research by examining both the current and future
impacts of Generative AI technologies on human creative practice,
creativity, and culture. The aim of this Special Issue is to present
state-of-the-art work across a variety of relevant disciplines. We welcome
contributions from researchers, theorists, practitioners and artists.

DRN 2024: CALL FOR PAPER PRESENTATIONS--Drawing Repetition
Conveners: Drawing Research Group, Loughborough University
Deadline: 1st December 2023

This series of online events aims to explore the notion of repetition in
drawing. By this we suggest that repetition is inherent to drawing in its
potentiality.

Where to begin? At the field of the surface yet to be marked by the trace
of a gesture. At the first mark made ordinal and original by the seriality
of the second, third, fourth. Each gesture tracing the dynamic arc of the
previous. Repetition engendering difference, not only across the surface
but in the choreography of the dance entrained to the rhythm of the mark.
And where there is rhythm, there is again the structuring of repetition and
difference. We return to the surface. Another oscillation. Casting away
towards the horizon where intention meets accident, anticipating the yet to
be otherwise. To return to the trace and its minimal repeatability.

So where to begin? Perhaps with that which gives rise to drawing; the
event. But we have been here before, with Drawing Repetition.

Each session of presented papers aims to provide a space for discussion,
dissemination, and the exchange of knowledge. With the intention of
promoting fertile interactions that explore this conceptually rich terrain,
we suggest the following as starting points and as possible themes, prompts
and provocations:

- How can repetitive mark-making and/or repetitive action enable
development?
- In what ways can a repeated image reinforce or transform meaning?
- What can the complexity of rhythm do to drawing?
- How can boredom or 'stuckness' incite novelty in drawing?
- In what ways can loops or circulatory processes or structures be
investigated through drawing?
- How can drawing explore habitual behaviour?

Each event will take the form of 2/3 presentations, which address the
call's theme, followed by a Q&A session. We would like to invite proposals
for a 20-minute presentation which addresses the theme from practitioners,
theorists, and practitioner-researchers. To apply please submit one word
.docx document, labelled as follows:

surname.forename.presentation and include the following:

- 250-word abstract detailing the research question and proposed
presentation
- 50-word biography

Deadline: 1st December 2023

GENERAL CALL FOR PAPERS FOR LUXURY STUDIES: The In Pursuit of Luxury
Journal

https://www.intellectbooks.com/luxury-studies#call-for-papers

Luxury is a constantly changing idea that provokes much debate. Whether
rooted in the manufacturing techniques developed during the eighteenth
century or the emergence of the kinds of digital processes that impact on
design, craftsmanship and production today, certain constants remain in how
we perceive and define luxury. Technology continues to influence our lives
and decision-making processes. Circular economic models address the need to
be aware of the impact of our actions on the production of goods and
services. Data driven information informs and enhances our understanding of
the customer and can provide goods and services to address their individual
needs. This is in stark contrast to mass produced products and 'services'
which - through global portals - contradict the very nature of luxury, with
its emphasis on the unique, the bespoke and the singular, over mass
consumption.

It could be said that the roles of manufacturing and craftsmanship are, and
remain, critical components of how luxury is defined. But is the impact of
digital technologies changing our very understanding of what luxury means
today? Should the notion of luxury be adapted/re-examined? If so, what form
should luxury take in terms of reflecting and reacting to continued
advancements in technological processes, opportunities and services? Luxury
Studies

Call for papers

Current concerns that need addressing include consumption, waste and the
impact of our actions on the planet, health and well-being, equality and
change. An emphasis on corporate social responsibility has enabled the
tracking and tracing of finished goods and the materials used in their
construction, including their environmental impact and the well-being of
those involved in production. As the industry becomes more transparent, can
luxury continue to remain beyond scrutiny?

Submissions

We welcome contributions from scholars from all disciplines and from
practitioners from all segments of luxury including but not limited to
fashion, jewellery, hospitality, architecture, automotive, technology and
aviation.

We are now accepting full papers (5000-7000 words) for the journal, and
also welcome book, exhibition and conference reviews. These should be
prepared using Intellect House Style, which is available to download from:
https://www.intellectbooks.com/journal-editors-and-contributors

All articles submitted should be original work and must not be under
consideration by other publications. Articles for Luxury Studies are
double-blind peer reviewed.

All submissions should be sent via the 'Submit' link on the journal webpage
(https://www.intellectbooks.com/luxury-studies), which will direct to the
IPOL manuscript submissions system. Please contact the editors for any
additional questions or information.
