I'd just like to add that in days-gone-by, catalogers routinely added
"relator terms" to names: "joint author, editor, compiler", etc. but
this information was considered to be essentially useless for searching,
and it entailed a lot of problems in practice: the cataloger had to
decide if a person was an editor or compiler or joint author. Many
times, the choices were not very clear. Here's an example from
Princeton's catalog.

If we decide to code the people in this way, the only purpose that I can
imagine is that they also will be searchable separately. But, without
extremely clear-cut rules (which catalogers themselves have never been
able to determine) there is no way to predict how a certain person will
be coded.
The result is: if I code someone as an editor, and Bernhard decides this
same person should be a compiler, a search for:
"fin name.compiler"
will miss my interpretation of him as editor.
For graphic materials and rare books, we do make these distinctions. We
use the terms such as "illustrator, engraver, etc." These are mainly for
collocation purposes. Another example from Princeton's catalog.

Extremely sensible. *Except make a distinction for publisher(!)*
