Modernising the city: experiences of urban change in post-war Britain
Applications are invited for a suitably-qualified candidate to work on a
one-year research project, commencing 1st January 2001, exploring the
experiences and memories of post-war reconstruction in British cities. This
unique research project, funded by the Leverhulme Trust, will use archival
sources and oral history techniques to explore the ways in which new urban
landscapes were experienced, represented and adapted by different factions
of British society during the 1940s and 1950s, bringing these voices into
dialogue with authorised accounts of post-war urban planning. The research
will particularly focus on the experiences of people living in Coventry, a
city which is emblematic of the forms of reconstruction associated with
Modern urban planning. The project will combine empirical research with
theoretical traditions from history, geography and sociology to illuminate
processes of urban change during the post-war era.
The successful candidate should have prior experience of qualitative data
collection, management and analysis. Familiarity with oral history or
unstructured interviewing techniques would be advantageous.
