CALL FOR PAPERS
Institute of Australian Geographers and New Zealand Geographical Society Joint Conference
30 June - 2 July 2014, Melbourne
Session Title: TOURISM GEOGRAPHIES
Sponsored by: Cultural Geography Study Group of the IAG
Organisers: Ben Iaquinto, Department of Resource Management and Geography, University of Melbourne, ([log in to unmask]) and Tara Duncan, Department of Tourism, University of Otago, ([log in to unmask])
Tourism is a common way through which many people come to learn about place. Practices of tourism are also significant in the construction and contestation of place. But the enormous growth and diversification of the tourism industry, along with the changing political, economic and environmental contexts in which tourism occurs has overwhelmed the research efforts required to understand it. The intersections between tourism and a range of geographical concerns such as place, consumption, sustainability, mobilities, economics, environment, migration, development and climate change, seemingly make tourism a central topic of concern to geographers. Yet tourism geography remains a niche area of interest. This standard paper session aims to highlight a range of research topics in tourism geographies. Contributions are welcome (but not limited to) any of the following themes:
Work and tourism
Pro poor tourism
Tourism and sustainability
Tourism research methods
Destination and/or place
Mobilities and tourism

Tourism and climate change
