Centre for Applied Social Surveys
SHORT COURSE: GRAPHICAL MODELLING
With Applications to the Social, Economic and Medical Sciences
Peter Smith and Joe Whittaker
14-16 September 1998
University of Southampton
Supported by the ESRC
under the Analysis of Large and Complex Datasets Programme
CASS is an ESRC Resource Centre hosted by
SCPR and the University of Southampton,
with the University of Surrey
Course Outline
The course introduces graphical models to research workers engaged in
the analysis of large and complex data sets. Graphical modelling is a
powerful practical technique for simplifying and describing
inter-relationships between many variables, based on the remarkable
correspondence between the statistical concept of conditional
independence and the graph-theoretic concept of separation.
The course gives a practical account of the techniques, with many
worked examples.
Course Content
graphical Gaussian models
graphical log-linear models
the Markov properties
methods of fitting graphical models to observational data
mixed interaction models
chain graph models
exact and Monte Carlo exact tests for graphical models
hands-on sessions using the MIM software for fitting graphical
models
Target Audience
The course is aimed at practising statisticians and at research
workers who use statistics with applications in the social, economic,
educational and medical sciences.
Course Materials
Participants will receive copies of transparencies and handouts.
The Instructors
Joe Whittaker is a senior lecturer in the Department of Mathematics
and Statistics at Lancaster University. He is author of the first
book on graphical modelling and has run many short courses on
graphical modelling.
Peter Smith is a lecturer in the Department of Social Statistics at
the University of Southampton. He has taught both Master courses and
on short courses on graphical modelling and exact tests.
Fee
300 pounds sterling (including course materials, coffee, tea and
lunch). Because of ESRC support, a number of bursaries are available
which reduce the fee to 70 pounds sterling for UK full-time students,
UK academic staff or ESRC-funded researchers.
Location
University of Southampton main campus on University Road, Highfield,
Southampton. During the course participants can be contacted via the
Department of Social Statistics (Tel: 01703 593048, Fax: 01703
593846).
Duration
The course will begin with registration and coffee at 10.30 a.m.
Monday 14 September 1998 and end around 4.00 p.m. Wednesday 16
