The "Nutopia : Exploring the Metropolitan Imagination" symposium took place
over two days in Cardiff (April '09) as part of a constellation of projects I have
been making in response to Cardiff's Victorian and Edwardian Arcades and in
the light of the SD2 shopping centre development. (www.arcadesproject.org)
The Nutopia Newspaper documents the event and extends the discussions
which emerged over the course of the symposium in relation to; the idea that
city centres are purely spaces of consumption, looking at the possibilities for
non-economic exchange, examining tensions between resistance and
commodification, the redevelopment and ownership of cities in the face of
privatisation and exploring the language of regeneration - place as a
perceptual landscape informed by a linguistic architecture.
