Bookmarks will automatically get built if converting from Word to pdf using
Acrobat. The Headers in Word become bookmarks.

the simplest way to obtain a pdf version of a document is to
generate a postscript version of the file and then use acrobat
distiller to convert the postscript to pdf.

this has the advantage that you can use whatever document
production software you want, e.g. tex, latex, microsoft word, excel,
matlab, spss etc. downside is generally no navigation via bookmarks.

some document production software is more tightly integrated into what
acrobat has to offer and using standard features (multiple chapters,
tables of contents, indices) will generate the bookmarks automatically.

i use corel ventura publisher and this is acrobat aware. it has been
for several years and i use multi chapter mode and table of contents
to organise the material and create the book marks automatically.

i have program language teaching material at kings that shows this.
the c++ notes are at

http://www.kcl.ac.uk/kis/support/cit//fortran/cpp/cpp.pdf

when jane slsightholme and i made the fortran 77 book available acrobat
didn't exist. i am going to see if i have the fortran 77 source around
somewhere and if i have i'll regenerate the book with bookmarks.

cheers
