THE SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY of LIBERATION: SEVENTH
INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS. COSTA
RICA, NOVEMBER, 2005
Since 1998, several universities in Latin America, with the
collaboration
of other groups, have carried out series of conferences in a joint
effort
to promote debate and discussion concerning the challenges and
tasks of a
psychology committed to social justice. This effort has been
inspired by
the writings of the social psychologist and Jesuit priest Ignacio
Martín-Baró. As you will remember, Martín-Baró was murdered,
along with
his colleagues, by the Salvadoran army in 1989 at the José
Simeon Cañas
Central American University in San Salvador.
Our colleagues in Guadalajara recalled, in 2002, the questions
posed by
Martín- Baró in 1989, which we still consider quite relevant:
- The epistemological question, which challenges the truth criteria of
psychological knowledge concerning Latin American reality as it is
lived
by the people.
- The conceptual question, which addresses the historical
specificity of
Latin American people, the comprehension of which is limited by
psychology
in its dominant mode.
- The practical question, which leads us to examine the praxis of
psychology in relation to the problems of the people.
Our concerns, of course, are not limited exclusively to the Latin
American
region, but rather have to do with social domination in its many
forms.
We are aware of the many and varied projects developed by
numerous
colleagues in our region and in the world, linking theory with
practice in
diverse fields, sometimes in very harsh conditions, and at great
personal
risk. We also point out the enormous challenges we face in a world
which
is increasingly unjust, where the m echanisms of social domination
become
ever more sophisticated, sometimes with the help of psychology.
All this
reinforces the need for discussion, reflection, and the sharing of
experiences so that we can, on the basis of the psychosocial
practices we
carry out, have something to offer in response to humanity’s most
urgent
and dignified tasks.
With the aim of contributing to these necessary efforts, we
announce the
SEVENTH INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON THE SOCIAL
PSYCHOLOGY LIBERATION, to be
held from November 16-19, 2005 at the University of Costa Rica in Liberia,
Guanacaste. We will be disseminating, in the next few months, further
information concerning the congress, its specific objectives,
registration
procedures, call for papers, participating institutions, etc.
We hope you will join us from November 16 to 19, 2005 in Costa
Rica!
