'Global Resistance': 20th Oct mtg
'Globalization' and 'free trade' are being widely promoted as inevitable
historical forces, even as natural ones. In response, opposition
movements have identified these slogans as weapons of the neoliberal
project. New resistance networks encompass various grassroots movements:
labour, environmental, student, anti-racist, farmer, and women activists
are building new alliances that increasingly pose a serious threat to the
neoliberal project. The opposition could be strengthened by a clearer
analysis of neoliberal strategy, but Left intellectuals have hardly
considered the practical, political and theoretical questions facing
international resistance networks.
Therefore a conference is being planned on the theme, 'Neoliberal
Globalization and Global Resistance: What Counter-Strategies?', for July
2000. It will be the annual event organized by the Conference of
Socialist Economists (CSE), which publishes the journal Capital & Class.
The next stage is to hold an open, exploratory brain-storming session in
order to solicit ideas about how the conference should be oriented. We
aim at bringing together people from various backgrounds and battlefronts.
(This is not a meeting of the organizing committee, whose membership has
yet to be formalized.)
You are invited to attend the session at 7.30pm on Wednesday 20th October
at Conway Hall (Tower Room 1), Red Lion Square, London WC1, near Holborn
tube station.
