I used to have an old Hogarth 'Collected' which amounted to about 50-60
pages. Anyone who, like me, was taught O and A level English in the 1970s by
unreconstructed Leavisites was always directed to a poem called 'Legal
Fictions' which Leavis had thought important. At that age, I found Empson
fairly incomprehensible so I guess he never 'stuck' with me. But thanks to
Sean O'Brien for reminding us of the good work John Haffenden has done/
continues to do. Does anybody read Seven Types of Ambiguity etc? Still worth
a look. I seem to remember that Empson had a rather eccentric beard - still
worth a look too probably if you can find a photo.
Cheers
David
