Being brought up in the craftsman/control-freak school of making things,
it took me some time to recognise the importance of "chance" in that
making. I think at first I felt a bit ashamed of something having come
there other than by my willing it so (this in spite of my standard-issue
60s eastern mysticism kit, which should've told me that the gap between
chance and deliberation ain't that big). I now find that I welcome that
element more, rather than less - particularly find it leads to more
possibilities in performance. I don't plan to relinquish "control" and
that old "cut out every word..." routine - but I do want to find ways to
be more open to, for instance, "mistakes".
Recognising on the list all kinds of other approaches to this part of
"composition", I thought I'd fling it into the pond to see which dogs
jumped after it...
