THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY: THREE CONTRASTING IMAGES OF CONTEMPORARY
CHINA IN THE GLOBAL TRANSFORMATIONS

Synopsis:
The transformation of contemporary China has instigated much hype and
hyperbole about the rise of China. Accompanying such hype and hyperbole are
a range of narratives that project contrasting images of China in global
international society. In this presentation, I outline three such
narratives, economic, political and human, and tease out intellectual and
policy challenges they pose in understanding China in transformation today.
I argue that such seemingly irreconcilable images of China are but
reflections of contradictions and complexities closely associated with the
China story. It is imperative to acknowledge how dynamics provided by such
contradictions might affect the global future in the 21st century.
All Welcome.
