I was interested to see that Sky are now transmitting adverts asking people to put their sky boxes on standby to save power. This contrasts with some of the TV adds which imply (misleadingly in my view) that TVs use more power when on standby than when in operation & must be switched off completely. They may use more energy on standby, but only if left on standby for considerable periods & watched infrequently. I'd like to see figures.
We often supply mains switches for TVs because the user likes to switch them off, but I'm sure it's not good use of money. Particularly for ECS users who may well watch TV for most of the day, the mount of energy soaked up on standby overnight should be tiny. But I haven't measured it.

Subject: EC Energy Consumption
Hi,
At our latest Environmental Control training course we had 10 SpRs in
attendance. An interesting question that came out was how much electricity
does an ECU use. I think the question came from a power saving question. So
to fill this out I would consider the following:
An ECU must be charged, intercoms must be left on, mains controllers must be
left on standby, TVs may be left on standby (although a mains socket may
solve this one).
Anyway has anyone investigated this power consumption and come up with a
figue, e.g. an ECU uses £10 extra per year of electricity.
Just wondering...
