Dear all
Some advice please – we are a small private archive, housed on the top floor of a Georgian building. We are planning to entirely refurbish the archive storage room over the summer. It is a very warm 2nd floor room under the roof of the house, with 3 large windows, storage furniture made out of old wardrobes and other wooden items, and ancient strip lighting that adds to the heat.
I would welcome views from anyone who has undertaken a similar project please, especially those who similarly had to factor in the needs of a heritage property as well as the needs of the archive. Is there anything you wish you had known beforehand? Are there any products that should be avoided?
Can colleagues also advise on periods of time to allow off-gassing processes to finish please – especially after painting and installation of shelving.
Many thanks all! Happy to summarise replies for the list if people prefer to reply off-list
Best

Subject: Archives Revealed Scoping Grants - Call for Consultants
Archives Revealed: Scoping Grants
We are looking for qualified archivists to join our list of approved consultants/experts who are able to provide advice and expertise to archive services and deliver our structured Scoping Grant reports to successful applicants. Consultants can either act on a freelance or consultancy basis, or on behalf of a larger organisation who provide consultancy/advice as a service. The Archives Revealed team will provide guidance to consultants on how to undertake the assessment and deliver the structured report.
What are Scoping Grants? - The Archives Revealed Scoping Grants programme aims to help organisations to strategically plan next steps and advocate internally and externally to gain support for projects or development plans. Scoping Grants fund the delivery of a structured report incorporating expert advice on areas relating to collections management and the development of collections.
What is in each report? - The reports will include an overview of the current status of the collection, analysis of condition, significance, existing and potential use, levels of access, and existing documentation, with recommendations for next steps and development goals.
For further information about the Scoping Grants programme and how to apply to join the list of consultants/experts, please contact us on [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

Can anyone recommend a temperature/ humidity monitor for a small strongroom that is accessible remotely? I work term time only and would like to be able to check the temp/humidity during the school holidays without having to actually come in.

Subject: Re Verification of readers and GDPR issues
Further to the emails about reader registration, you may have seen a posting to the list back in February from Gary Tuson, the Chair of CALGG (Chief Archivists in Local Government Group) about a proposed new national reader ticket, the 'Archives Card'.
The Archives Card is a replacement for the CARN ticket, which will be disappearing shortly; the ARA can no longer afford to administer CARN, particularly in light of GDPR, so any offices that currently use CARN will have to set up their own reader ticket systems if they don't want to continue with a national Archives Card reader ticket.
The Archives Card is open to all types of archive services, not just those who currently use CARN, and as a GDPR compliant, fully electronic system it would save all those headaches about what information to collect and how long to keep it. If your reader signing-in book is a GDPR concern, you could even get rid of that and just register visits using the Archives System if you want.
At the CALGG AGM on 30 April we expect to make a recommendation about whether the new Archives Card will go ahead or not. The more offices that sign up, the more viable the Archives Card is, so if you think you might be interested then please get it in touch either with me or with Gary Tuson ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) before Monday 30 April.
Best wishes,
Sarah

This half-day workshop aims to share experiences about increasing archival access, engagement and outreach. The main focus will be Beyond Boxes, a two-year access and engagement project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, which has been working in partnerships with The Brighton Housing Trust, Blind Veterans UK and HMP Lewes to records peoples experiences of everyday life.
The day will include presentations about the Mass Observation Archive, how to run and implement an outreach project and working with project volunteers with emphasis on the Buddy scheme, which was established as part of the project and offers support and assistance to visitors to the archive. The day will also involve a tour of The Keep (www.thekeep.info<http://www.thekeep.info>) and the opportunity to see the Beyond Boxes Exhibition. This will be a chance to meet other professionals, volunteers, share experiences and tell others about the project you are or intend to work on.
While this training day will focus mainly on outreach in an archival context, everyone is welcome to attend.
Numbers for the day are limited so booking is essential.

Subject: Funding Sources
Dear members,
I am searching, on behalf of a colleague, for potential sources of funding for an archives related project within their organisation.
The organisation in question is a registered charity, dealing with adoption records, as well as after-care, and the project would involve the creation of a large, searchable database of records containing sensitive data. The organisation receives in excess of 500 queries per year, and the current filing system is a basic card index of between 25-50,000 individual records.
It is likely that the project would take approximately 2-3 years (full time), and funding bids would probably be in the area of £100-150,000.
Any advice or recommendations would be very much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Karen O'Connor

Subject: Consultancy vacancy: Inviting proposals from experienced Digital Records Management Consultants
Dear Colleagues,
We are inviting proposals from experienced Digital Records Management Consultants as we are looking to work with a digital records expert to advise and consult on the next stage of our internal archive project.
The archive of the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations (TIHR) provides a comprehensive record of the formation, establishment and development of the Institute over a period of 70 years. From the early records of projects with the War Officer Selection Board in the 1940s, which led to the establishment of the TIHR, through many significant projects across the 20th century and into the 21st.
Currently, we are nearing the end of a two-year project that has successfully deposited and catalogued a significant archive of material with the Wellcome Library. A full catalogue of this material can be found here<http://archives.wellcomelibrary.org/DServe/dserve.exe?dsqIni=Dserve.ini&dsqApp=Archive&dsqDb=Catalog&dsqCmd=show.tcl&dsqSearch=(RefNo==%27SATIH%27)>. Having established our collection at Wellcome, the archive project is now moving into its second exciting stage of work: progressing from paper records into the digital records we hold. This stage looks to not only audit and identify our current digital records collection, but also feeds into a bigger process of streamlining our current information management processes.
In order to move to this next stage, we are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced Digital Records Management Consultant with the ability and interest to implement and manage the planning of a new digital phase of archiving. We are keen to continue our public engagement work along the way (please take a look here at our archive blog<http://www.tihr-archive.tavinstitute.org/>, which documents the process thus far), so an interest in outreach and bringing the work to wider audiences would be an advantage.
If you are interested in working with us then please take a look at the full proposal<http://www.tavinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/TIHR_DRMC-contract-description.pdf> which includes comprehensive details of the next phases of work. If you wish to submit a proposal for this work, please contact Meg Davies who will be able to advise you, on [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>.
We look forward to hearing from you.
With thanks and best wishes,
Elizabeth

They include two of the earliest-known photographs of the cathedral; one of

The fragile plate glass negatives were discovered by a volunteer at W. W.

Subject: Conserve the Sound is an archive of noises from old tape players, projectors and other dying tech
All of us grew up around tech different from what we have today, and many
of us look back on those devices with fondness. But can you recall the
exact sound your first Casio keyboard made, or the cadence of a rotary
phone’s clicks? Conserve the Sound aims to, well, conserve the sound of
gadgets like these so that future generations will know what it sounded
like to put a cartridge in the NES.
It’s actually quite an old project at this point, having been funded first
in 2013, but its collection has grown to a considerable size. The money
came from German art institution Film & Medienstiftung NRW; the site was
created (and is maintained) by creative house Chunderksen.
