TEMPORARY ARCHIVIST
JOB DESCRIPTION.
A person is required for a six month period to work with the Proprietary
Information Team of the Corporate Communications Dept of ING Bank, London
Branch.
ING Group is a major international financial services business with its head
office in Amsterdam. ING Bank London Branch is based on the former business
of Baring Brothers, the investment bank acquired by ING in 1995.
The Proprietary Information Team looks after the historical archives and the
art collection of ING Bank in London. These mostly comprise the collections
of Barings. The Baring archive is perhaps the finest investment bank archive
in the world, dating from the 1760s to the 1990s and covers the development
of international trade and finance and associated political and economic
events such as the Louisiana Purchase, the building of the earliest railways
in many countries, the Russo-Japanese War and Imperial Russia during the
First World War period.
The art collection forms one of the leading corporate collections in the UK
with works by artists ranging from Sir Thomas Lawrence to Stanley Spencer
and from Samuel Palmer to LS Lowry.
A second major role of the Proprietary Information Team is to manage
databases containing proprietary information about clients, transactions,
contacts, etc.
The person recruited will work as a member of a team of three and will
assist the other two team members. Tasks will include:
* add data to proprietary information databases and generally manage
data in these databases
*
* assist in the preparation of archive facsimile books for marketing
purposes
*
* assist in the preparation of small displays of documents for
marketing purposes
*
* assist researchers using historical archives by delivering archives
to them and by generally supervising them
*
* assist in the move of the historical archives store and the
associated preparation work, all of which is planned for the summer
*
* assist with the management of ING Bank London Branch's art
collection
*
* there may be some opportunity for cataloguing historical archives
*
* The person to be appointed should:
* be a graduate and have a qualification in archives administration or
be preparing to take one
*
* have good keyboard skills and a sound knowledge of Microsoft Office
packages
*
* have data management skills
*
* have strong presentation skills and be able to deal with people at
all levels both inside and outside the bank
*
* be a good team player and be prepared to undertake both routine and
more complex tasks.
