The WRVS Archive & Heritage Collection is looking for a skilled and enthusiastic volunteer to assist in the development of access to its collection at its repository in Devizes, Wiltshire.
The collection was awarded UNESCO UK Memory of the world Status in July 2010 and is considered of outstanding value and importance to the UK.
WRVS was founded in 1938 as the 'Women's Voluntary Services' to assist in the recruitment of women into the Air Raid Precautions department of the Home Office, ahead of the Second World War. It soon outgrew its original purpose and through the 20th century provided essential services, from holidays for disadvantaged children to the delivery of meals-on-wheels, for every community in the UK. The Charity's focus today is the practical support of older people through volunteering.
Your main task will be assisting with our ongoing cataloguing project, in preparations for launch of an online catalogue in 2012. However, there will also be opportunities to participate in the day to day running of the collection as well as to get involved in preparations for the organisations 75th Anniversary.
The opportunity would be ideal for a gap year student with an interest in 20th century history or a graduate who is thinking of pursuing a career in the archives sector.
