Call for Application for AHRC Studentship Competition at the
Department of Archaeology, University of Reading
We would like to invite those interested in commencing doctoral
research from October 2011, to investigate the full range of plant
macrofossils, including charcoal, recovered from Teutonic Order castle
sites in north Poland, Latvia and Estonia (medieval Prussia and
Livonia) within the framework of the Ecology of Crusading research
project (http://www.ecologyofcrusading.com/). The primary aim will be
to identify plants which may have been economically and culturally
important to the process of colonisation following the crusades,
contributing to an understanding of changing dietary regimes,
provisioning networks, broader European trade networks, and landuse.
This study would benefit from broader research into the changing
environment of the medieval eastern Baltic provided by the project.
The PhD would be based at the Department of Archaeology, University of
Reading, and would be supervised by Dr Alex Brown and Dr Aleks
Pluskowski. If you are interested in pursuing doctoral work on the
palaeobotany of Iron Age and Medieval sites in the Baltic, and would

competitive, and candidates with a first class honours at
undergraduate level and a distinction at MSc level will have the best
chance of securing this funding. Previous experience of fieldwork and
plant macrofossil analysis is desirable.
