The Centre Cannot Hold? New Monumentality, Neo-Modernism and Other Zombie Urban Utopias
Friday 10 June 2016, 8:30am — Saturday 11 June 2016, 7:00pm
Calvert 22 Foundation, Calvert Avenue, London
What forms of centrality, monumentality and grandeur continue to enrich and afflict 21st century cities? What alleged relics of the high modern (or pre-modern) urban past do we continue to live and engage with (and re-create) today?
Although the points of departure of some of the questions raised emerge from post-socialist Eurasia, the conference’s thematic reach is global. One of our aims is to explore parallels between the experience of the ‘second world’ after socialism, and of the world as a whole after modernity.
This event will be led by Michał Murawski (SSEES, UCL) and Jonathan Bach (New School, New York), and organised by UCL SSEES’ FRINGE Centre. The line-up includes contributions from prominent researchers, architects and artists such as Vladimir Papeny,Vyjayanthi Rao, Owen Hatherley, Clementine Cecil, Hilary Wainwright, Łukasz Stanek and Wendy Pullan, among many others.
