1.1 ALT Christmas closure
ALT is closed from 22 Dec - 1 January, re-opening Wednesday 2 January
2013. If you have an urgent enquiry during this time, please contact us

1.2 ALT launches 2012 Survey
The survey's purpose is to help us improve our services and to better
understand the needs of our community. The deadline for completing the
survey is 31 December 2012. Key results will be published via the ALT
website in 2013.

1.4 Transforming scholarly communication - workshop report and video

JISC has published a report from a workshop about transforming scholarly
communication that it ran in July 2012 jointly with the US-based

1.6 Robin Mason Fellowships
ALT has set up a fund to commemorate Robin Mason’s life. The purpose of
the fellowship fund is to support researchers who cannot otherwise come

2. ALT events
2.1 OER13: Creating an OER Virtuous Circle, 26-27 March 2013
OER13 will take place at the University of Nottingham, renowned for its
Open Nottingham programme which has strategically embraced the agenda of
open access to teaching. The Conference programme will consist of an
engaging mix of refereed papers, workshops, symposia, posters and
demonstrations exploring the impact of OER on HE within the conference
themes.

2.2 altc2013 Building new cultures of learning
The 20th annual conference of the Association for Learning Technology
will be held at the University of Nottingham, 10-12 September 2013.

3.1 Outcomes of the JISC Curriculum Design programme
The final synthesis report from the JISC Institutional Approaches to
Curriculum Design Programme has been published. This report authored by
Helen Beetham provides a detailed analysis of the outcomes from this
four-year programme of work which completed in July this year.

3.2 The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education has published
Chapter B3: learning and teaching of the UK Quality Code for Higher

4.1 Changing the Learning Landscape – deadline update

4.4 13th Durham Blackboard Users’ Conference: Make Do Or Spend? 8 - 9
January 2013 at the University of Durham
This is a conference organised by the user community, for the user
community. The audience is a mix of repeat attendees and first time

4.5 Workshop: Video Tools for Educational Reflection and Analysis, 16
January 2013, Liverpool John Moores University.
A one-day, hands-on workshop combining online materials and easy-to-use
tools. The workshop uses tools designed to facilitate students' and
teachers' use of video in teaching and learning activities developed
during the ESRC Ensemble Project and a follow-on project in the JISC OER
programme. Participants are welcome to bring their own materials to work
with, so that they can leave with a new tool to use in their teaching.

4.6 Teaching Online Courses: 16 January - 15 February
This is the first in a series of three courses, which together will help
you prepare for planning and teaching online courses. There is really no
other way to learn the skills required of the online tutor other than in
the online environment. It is highly participative and is designed
around frequent opportunities for participants to practise and receive
feedback on their developing skills as an online tutor.

4.9 Online and open-access learning in higher education: MOOCs, new
pedagogies and business models - 5 February 2013, Senate House, London
The University of London International Programmes, Observatory of
Borderless Higher Education and the Leadership Foundation are co-hosting
a special seminar focusing on new models of open access and online
provision in Higher Education, including MOOCs. The event will feature

4.10 E-books and Accessibility Ugly Duckling or Adolescent Swan? 13

5.3 Call for papers for the International Journal of Information
Processing and Management
The goal of the IJIPM is to publish peer reviewed original research

5.4 Call for papers for the EFMD Higher Education Research Conference:

6. Funding calls
6.1 National Teaching Fellowship Scheme 2013
Nominations will close on 4 March 2013. Up to 55 awards of £10,000 are
made to recognise individual excellence. The award is intended for
National Teaching Fellows' professional development in teaching and
learning or aspects of pedagogy. The documentation for NTFS 2013 and

6.2 SEDA Legacy Awards and Research Grants
SEDA will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2013. The SEDA Legacy Awards
and Research Grants will celebrate and raise awareness of the
Association's contribution to educational development in UK HE. Legacy
Awards recognise individuals who have made an outstanding contribution
to educational and staff development. The team award recognises the
group that has made a significant and sustained impact in educational
development in the last 20 years. Two grants of up to £9,000 each will
be given for projects that inform and support the future of educational
development in the UK. The deadline for submission for both the awards
and grants is 31st January 2013.

6.3 More funding for green projects
The third round of HEFCE’s Revolving Green Fund (RGF) is announced
today, with £20 million available from 2013.

6.4 Second call to the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund
Following on from the success of the first round of the UK Research
Partnership Investment Fund (UKRPIF), HEFCE is inviting proposals from
UK universities for large-scale projects (minimum £10 million from
UKRPIF) that can lever twice as much funding from private sources
(businesses, charities, individual donations).
Proposals are to be submitted to HEFCE by 11 February 2013 and will be
assessed by the UKRPIF panel in March. The successful projects will be
announced in May 2013.

6.5 Open Call for Fellowship Applications, Academic Year 2013-2014
The Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University has
opened our yearly call for fellowship applications. This opportunity is
for those who wish to spend the 2013-2014 academic year in residence in

7.2 Social Media Handbook for Researchers and Supervisors
Vitae and The Open University, UK have launched a ‘Handbook of Social
Media for Researchers and Supervisors: Digital technologies for research
dialogues’. Funded through Vitae Innovate and developed by Dr Shailey
Minocha and Professor Marian Petre of the Centre for Research in
Computing, this handbook aims to assist researchers and their
supervisors to adopt and use social media tools in the service of their
research, and, in particular in engaging in the discourse of research.
The handbook presents an innovative suite of resources for developing
and maintaining a social media strategy for research dialogues.

7.3 CETIS Analytics Series
Understanding core business is critical for universities and colleges
and there is increased interested in how analytics can be used
strategically. The CETIS Analytics Series explores a number of key
issues around the potential strategic advantages and insights which
analytics approaches can bring to the education sector. Funded by JISC
the Series is aimed primarily at managers and early adopters in Further
and Higher Education who have a strategic role in developing the use of
analytics in the following areas: Whole Institutional Issues; Ethical
