*DISEASE MAPPING AND RISK ASSESSMENT FOR PUBLIC HEALTH*
*A two-day course with an optional half day extension***
*11-13 October 2004*
*Course contenT***
This course is designed to provide an introduction to the area of
spatial epidemiology including disease mapping, issues related to
disease clustering and risk assessment. Application areas include Public
Health and Epidemiology:
The two-day course consists of sessions dealing with:
*DAY 1*
• Basic concepts of disease mapping
• Disease cluster assessment
• Risk assessment around health hazards
• Basic mapping methods and map interpretation
• Computer practical
• Case study introduction
*DAY 2*
• Case study - part two
• Disease clustering (interactive)
*DAY 3* (Optional half-day extension)
This is designed for those who want to cover more advanced mapping
methods, and includes ecological analysis and the use of WinBugs software.
The course will include theoretical input, but also practical elements
and participants will be involved in a hands on tutorial with the
ArcView mapping package. In addition, a review and demonstration of GIS
tools for disease mapping will be provided (ArcView and MapInfo).
Participants will take part in a Case Study Scenario and have hands-on
experience of a disease-clustering problem.
*The speakers*
*Dr. Andrew B. Lawson* (Arnold School of Public Health, University of
South Carolina) is a World Health Organisation (WHO) advisor on Disease
Mapping and recently organised with the WHO an International workshop on
this topic which has led to an edited volume “Disease Mapping and Risk
Assessment for Public Health”.
*Dr. Fiona L. R. Williams* (University of Dundee) has extensive
experience within environmental epidemiology, and in particular, the
analysis of putative health hazards.
The presenters have jointly authored an introductory text in the area of
the course.//
*Who should attend*
The course is intended for epidemiologists and public health workers who
need to analyse geographical disease incidence. In addition, the course
may be of interest to statisticians or geographers and planners who deal
with spatial disease data. Some statistical/epidemiological background
would be beneficial but is not essential.
*Why attend*
Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of the basic issues,
methods and techniques used in the analysis of spatial health data. They
will gain insight into the detailed analysis of practical cluster alarm
scenarios in public health. The course is presented by leading
researchers in the field of disease mapping and spatial epidemiology.
*course fees*
