on Tuesday 16th November 1999 from 5pm-7pm
at the RSS, 12 Errol Street, London EC1 (Barbican and Moorgate are the nearest underground stations).
TWENTIETH CENTURY BRITAIN: SOME REFLECTIONS ON SOCIAL STATISTICS
A. H. Halsey (Nuffield College Oxford)
This Memorial Lecture will take place close to the publication of British Social Trends 1900-2000, edited by A.H.Halsey.
He writes "This lecture will reflects on the study of social trends in Britain since 1900 in terms of theory, method and substance. What does the tradition of political arithmetic tell us about twentieth century Britain? What do social statistics tell us about change, success and failure in the institutions of production and reproduction, and the modes of persuasion and coercion, in the first industrial nation?"
