Subject: Assessment Board models

Dear All

We are currently looking at how we manage assessment boards and wanted to find out from anyone who has moved away from standard Department/School level assessment boards. Happy to collate responses and circulate.

How are your boards structured?
We have 7 Schools and each has its own Board of Examiners, chaired by the respective Head of School. Each School has a main Board and a resit board for both UG and PG provision (so 4 boards a year for each school). If numbers are small, we will often combine the boards for two or more schools (e.g. there is only one combined PG resit board).

Who sits on them?
Constitution comprises:

  *   Head of School
  * Course Leaders for the courses under consideration
  * A representative from Quality Assurance
  *   A representative from Registry
Quorum: 50% of the membership including the chair.

How do you deploy External Examiners?
We have recently updated the constitution so External Examiners no longer form part of the board's quoracy requirements, though they are still welcome to attend should they wish (for which they are paid). EEs make one or two assessment visits per year for their respective courses (only one is funded centrally, if courses choose to have a second visit, this is funded from the course budget).

If at a University level, how do you manage local preparation?
All Boards are scheduled centrally and the schedule circulated before the beginning of each academic year. About a week before the main Boards, a joint pre-board meeting takes place attended by senior administrative staff from Quality and Registry to error check the board profiles and ensure accuracy for the main event (Boards do not have authority to change individual marks.)

What have been the pitfalls in moving to this model?
It works well for us. UCA has very few exams and almost all assessment is done via course work or presentations.

Best wishes and have a great weekend.

Heather
