We updated our Mit Circs Policy last year and it now states the following:

Evidence submitted in support of mitigating circumstances must demonstrate the impact the circumstances had on the student’s ability to submit or present for an assessment by the given deadline.   Examples of acceptable evidence may include:

·                     Evidence of a medical/health condition which occurred or impacted during the period immediately leading up to the assessment date and/or the actual assessment date. It is at the Course Leader’s discretion whether or not to accept the evidence presented, however it should be noted that self-certification will not normally be accepted;

All

Having decided last year to maintain the stance that independent evidence is required in support of extension requests, we’re forced to revisit this again in response to a growing number of complaints from local medical practitioners, some of whom

are no longer willing to provide evidence in support of either extensions or deferrals to the next submission point. With sincere apologies, would you mind answering the same questions again, particularly if you have recently changed your policy or are seriously considering doing so?

Best wishes,

Steve

Colleagues

We are currently considering allowing students to self-certify for extensions to coursework submission deadlines, although we would want to limit the number of occasions on which an individual could do this in any given academic year. I’d be grateful if you could answer the following questions:

  1. do you allow students to self-certify for extensions to submission deadlines?
  2. if so, do you limit this in any way?

Please reply to [log in to unmask]

I will of course circulate a summary of responses.

Best wishes,

Steve
