It is very similar to what opticians still use to keep your head still and at a set distance (I think!) Chris

Hello SHCG,
Another mystery object from Gallery Oldham. The first one was too easy!
This object has a wooden handle and a lever just above the handle which lowers two prongs underneath, via a sprung ratchet, if you press it with your thumb. We have no idea what it is, or where it came from I'm afraid. We're thinking maybe something from the photographic trade or perhaps something an optician might have used, but don't have a clue, to be honest... Can anybody help?
Many thanks
Bill
