Dear colleagues,
As you may recall, I asked for volunteers to act as a co-signatories on an open letter regarding the privileging of prime voices in news media regarding the Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why. After two weeks of shopping this around the usual suspects with little success (The Guardian, The Independent, Huffington Post and The Conversation), we decided to host the document on Bournemouth University's website with a view to publicising locally and then hopefully open up a democratic and public debate if this gets picked up nationally. We have been astounded at how much objection and obstacle has been erected by mainstream news media around the series and that alternative voices from media and cultural studies (and film, TV, and journalism studies too) have effectively been drowned out or silenced altogether. We would appreciate it if you would circulate through your usual channels of dissemination. The open letter is accompanied by a short article. Links provided below.
Thanks to scholars who emailed with questions, protestations and support. We strongly believe that this is about open, public debate, but our main aim at this point was to protest the language of moral panicking adopted and spread by news media in the UK and US. As I said in an earlier email, we have been here before.
