Many thanks, Paul. I've looked at The White Peacock meanwhile, which does fit the point I am trying to argue. ( I also briefly looked at and briefly at Women in Love, but its textual history is already too complicated for my purposes. ) Of course I agree that first editions are not the only option in selecting copy-text. Certainly not in DHL's case. In that respect, Lawrence might not be the best illustration for a point that is much more basic and that, everything else being equal, is about UK v US.
