Dear Huzefa,

1.
We too have stickers for barcodes rather than an advancing stamped accession number, or printing the accession number on the RFID tag. These are stuck to the books' title pages and this practice predates computerisation in the early 1990s. RFID here was introduced in 2015 (as we are a small library re staffing and cost) and the tags were added to books programmed using the barcodes already in each book with no other information. Since then, both barcode and RFID tag are added to each book. [...]

Good morning Huzefa
I worked in academic libraries for a lot of years and have been there long
enough to see the development of the systems from Browns issue! My
experience the visual codes would have some first and been utilised
pre-RFID, then when it was implemented the existing codes will have been
used alongside the new RFID codes to link them. Most often the RFID system
will allow you to associate the old code with the tag. Even if that were
not possible, I suspect most library people would be very uncomfortable
with removing barcodes and possibly damaging the [...]

Dear all,

I recently had the opportunity to visit Mohammed Bin Rashid Library, one of
the most modern libraries in the world. OR inside
the books.

As we have recently implemented an RFID system in our library, we are
reevaluating our book labelling practices. Seeing the inclusion of both
barcodes and RFID stickers at Mohammed Bin Rashid Library sparked my
curiosity, and I am reaching out to inquire about the rationale behind this
dual labelling approach.
