Best cat of all must be in Durer's engraving of the Temptation.

If I recall correctly, as Eve accepts the _malum_ (pretty clearly an 
apple here) from the wonderfully-wrought crowned serpent in the tree and is
about to pass it on to a poor, hapless Adam, down below, a crafty, over-fed
and squint-eyed cat fixes to pounce on a hapless mouse.

There's a message there, somewhere.....

I *believe* that there is a very handsome--and somewhat less malign--cat in
Durer's engraving of St. Jerome in his study, as well.

Of course, purists would claim that Durer is "early modern."
