Post: ACCESS OFFICER

Responsible to: DIRECTOR

Responsible for: EDUCATION OFFICER AND EDUCATION VOLUNTEERS

Purpose of Job: The purpose of the Job is to further develop the Museum's audience to promote the Trust's educational aims and develop a lifelong learning programme. The current Educational Policy accompanies this Job Description.

Main Activities:

* To review the educational policy and draw up a comprehensive education action plan.    * To raise awareness of the Museum and its work.    * To identify under represented target audiences and through new initiatives encourage participation in the Museum and its activities, both visitors and volunteers.    * To build on established markets to offer a wider programme of events based on the Museum's themes and collections.    *To assist with securing funds and resources for education and interpretation projects.

* To encourage student projects and graduates to undertake discreet and innovative projects of work for the Trust.    * To update the Trust Board on educational initiatives and trends and to give regular evaluation reports on the developments made in line with the education policy.    * To liase with other Museum professionals: to represent the Trust at educational meetings and to offer advice and support to other Museum bodies as requested.    * To support other staff and undertake other duties as requested by the Director.

As part of a small professional team you will also act as Duty Manager.

Person Specification:

Essential

* knowledge of educational learning in practice    * practical experience of working in the heritage/voluntary community sector    * knowledge of museum access issues and audience needs    * flexible attitudes to working routines    * good organisational skills    * self motivated    * a great team worker    * ability to manage and work with a wide range of people     * ability to think imaginatively about resource use    * able to work to deadlines and appreciate tight budgets    * analytical skills include report writing    * keyboard skills

Desirable

* knowledge of museum marketing issues    * experience of fundraising    * presentation skills    * car owner

Qualifications:

The post holder should have an appropriate honours degree.

Terms and Conditions:

1. Initial 3-year contract    2. Salary £14,000    3. Working week is 37.5 hours per week, worked mainly Monday to Friday, with rota weekends, Bank Holidays and occasion evenings.    4. The appointment will be subject to a 26-week probation period.    5. Notice period is four weeks in writing on either side.    6.
