The Institute of Cancer Research

MEDICAL STATISTICIAN
Clinical Trials & Statistics Unit (CTSU), Section of
Epidemiology

The Clinical Trials and Statistics Unit (CTSU) is part of
the Section of Epidemiology at the Sutton site of The
Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). The ICR, together with
the adjacent Royal Marsden NHS Trust (RMT), is one of the
world's leading cancer research centres.

The CTSU initiates, conducts and analyses national and
international randomised clinical trials of cancer
treatment designed to directly influence routine clinical
practice within the National Health Service and overseas.
The Unit has a special interest in breast cancer but also
conducts trials in other disease sites. The CTSU currently
employs five statisticians, six trial co-ordinators/data
managers, a research assistant and three part-time research
secretaries, with clinical co-ordinators and additional
trial co-ordinators working in close collaboration. Many
of the trials are run by the CTSU in collaboration with a
principal clinician (clinical co-ordinator) at the RMT.

Applications are invited for a statistician to join the
CTSU to work on the initiation, conduct and analysis of
clinical trials of cancer treatment conducted in
collaboration with clinical colleagues. You will be
involved in all aspects of study design, data handling,
statistical analysis and trial management and will also be
encouraged to pursue your own research interests. Your
principal role will be to work with our clinical colleagues
at the RMT on the development of new studies and on
continuing studies which are underway.

We are seeking an experienced statistician, who holds a
post-graduate qualification in statistics (preferably
medical statistics) to join an existing successful research
team. Experience with survival analysis methods / clinical
trials procedures and general programming skills (in SPSS,
STATA, EGRET) would be strongly preferred. The ability to
communicate statistical concepts to clinicians and other
health professionals is essential, as is the ability to
organise working time appropriately and effectively.
Applicants should be equally happy whether working as part
of a team or independently. This post is available for 3
years in the first instance.

Salary in the range 17,886-31,210 including London
weighting.
