Two items I read this week:

John Nelder's paper in The Statistician, Vol 48:2 1999, "From statistics
to statistical science" in which he comments that "almost nobody knows
what statisticians do" and stresses the role of the statistician
in designing experiments and evaluating results.

And a job advert in THES 11 June p42 for the "Director of the Library and
Information Statistics Unit": "The Director leads on developing and
delivering the research agenda, and credibility with the sector is
therefore essential. Interest in and commitment to providing excellent
quantitative data is expected, but a qualification in statistics is not
required."
