Publication Bias and Funnel Plots

Publication bias is a major problem in meta-analysis or systematic
reviews. The problem is usually ignored unless the funnel plot shows a
significant trend between study size and study outcome. By modeling
this trend explicitly we suggest a new approach to sensitivity
analysis. A review of the epidemiological evidence on lung cancer and
passive smoking shows that only a small effect is needed to seriously
downweight the estimated relative risk.
