The evening prior to the RSS/Biometric Society meeting on Analysis of Genetic Data the General Applications Section will be holding a related meeting which may be of interest to those planning to attend the one day meeting. Mike Denham [log in to unmask] Details follow: ============================================== RSS - GENERAL APPLICATIONS SECTION Monday 22 March, 4:00pm at the RSS (Tea 4:45pm) =============================================== 4:00pm PAK SHAM (Institute of Psychiatry) Mapping QTL by linkage and association: models, power, and selection strategies A variance-components model for QTL linkage and association analysis will be presented. Approximate expressions for the powers of the two tests will be derived. Procedures for optimal sample selection based on trait scores will be described. 5:15pm JOHN WHITTAKER (University of Reading) Allelic association in complex diseases There has been much recent interest in the possibility of using allelic association to locate the genes contributing to complex human diseases. Data are often assumed to consist of genotypic information on family units comprising an affected individual and both parents of that individual. We review briefly the key concepts involved in the analysis of such data, and point out some connections between the many methods of analysis that have been suggested. The reliability in finite samples of the asymptotic distributional results that are usually relied on will be assessed. We will discuss the value of data on unaffected siblings of affected individuals, either in addition to the affected individual-parent trios described earlier, or in cases where parental information is unavailable. The possible advantages of enriching samples with families where one or more parents are also affected will be considered. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
