Kit French, who does not subscribe to medieval-religion (shame on her!),
sent this reply to my query about her work on church seating. I second her
recommendation of Gilchrist's book.

Subject: church seating

i am indeed working on church seating--as we speak--in respect to women and
their involvement in the parish. aston has the best introduction to the
subject although it is wide ranging. you also might look at roberta
gilchrists book on the archaeology of convents, because she develops the
idea of women's spaces in the church more fully, and in a way i find rather
helpful. there isn't yet much out there except for anecdotes in other
works. charles cox has a book on bench end with has lovely photos as i
recall. hope this helps.
