It may be only a temporary (and local) solution, but you can each set up a mail filter in your email programme and filter all c-g-f mail to a separate folder to read at the end of the day/week/month - that way you don't get notified when it arrives and it doesn't clog up your new mail folder, but you still get to read all the messages.
