A very interesting thread developing here on the (sometimes) obscure differences between monks and friars. Certainly, one has to wonder if our sources are distorted by the "winners". Thinking of the 10th century reforms in England, specifically. In the 11th century Bishop Leofric is cited by William of Malmesbury (himself a monk) as having expelled nuns and canons from the house at Exeter. There are many questions raised by historians such as Frank Stenton as to the validity of the assertions, charges made against canons or friars by such monastic historians.
