The foundation - known as the Australian Foundation for Studies in Italy (AFSI) - currently has as its primary purpose the annual provision of financial awards to enable young Australian scholars, artists and professionals to pursue work on a project in Italy. Six young Australians-including several historians, an archaeologist and an opera singer-were successful in the first round of grants in 1995, and a further four were awarded grants in the second round. A third round is currently under way. AFSI is chaired by Professor F.W. Kent of Monash University in Melbourne, Australian. Its members include Australian scholars in a variety of disciplines and fields. The Foundation is advised by the prominent Melbourne lawyer Mr Daryl Abrahams.
