Australian Foundation for Studies in Italy



An Australian national foundation to support Italian Studies was created in
1994. The foundation - known as the Australian Foundation for Studies in
Italy (AFSI) - currently has as its primary purpose the annual provision of
financial awards to enable young Australian scholars, artists and
professionals to pursue work on a project in Italy.



Six young Australians-including several historians, an archaeologist and an
opera singer-were successful in the first round of grants in 1995, and a
further four were awarded grants in the second round.  A third round is
currently under way.



AFSI is chaired by Professor F.W. Kent of Monash University in Melbourne,
Australian.  Its members include Australian scholars in a variety of
disciplines and fields. The Foundation is advised by the prominent Melbourne
lawyer Mr Daryl Abrahams.
