Master in Research (MRes) in Occupational Health, Psychology, and Management (OHPM) @ Birkbeck University

*** APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN FOR 2020/21***

Applications are now open for our Master in Research (MRes) in Occupational Health, Psychology, and Management (OHPM), offered by the Centre for Sustainable Working Life, at Birkbeck, University of London. This a two-year, part-time course, based on seminar-style teaching, thus flexible, and designed to accommodate those already in employment. The seminars take place on Thursdays, every fortnight. Supervision sessions will be arranged to accommodate students’ work schedules, and at mutually convenient times. Successful completion at this Master’s level can lead to an upgrade to the full doctoral programme (PDP) if you wish to continue your studies. The course has a small group approach and values the sharing amongst members of their existing knowledge and experiences of work. The course is tailored to students’ specific research interests. Across years and cohorts, we are trying to build a team approach around researchers in the Centre.

Course Director: Professor Tom Cox CBE

As part of the MRes, you will complete a total of six seminar modules, with five of them in the first year (to provide a foundation in the multi-disciplinarity around occupational health, psychology, and management, and to develop students’ project interests). The second year is focused on the completion of a systematic review in students’ specific research area.

Teaching on the course is highly interdisciplinary and informed by cutting-edge research in relevant fields. This MRes will develop your understanding of health, psychology, and management, in multiple contexts (individual, organizational, social, occupational, political, etc.). It takes a holistic perspective. However, we do focus on occupational contexts and working life, long-term conditions, sustainability, real-world research, research ideology and ethics, and issues around translating research into policy and practice. Throughout, you will be encouraged to reflect on both theory and practice, and think critically about the information that you come across. You will acquire applied research skills in preparation for a systematic review on your specific research area. As part of the programme’s guest seminars, you will be taught by leading academics and practitioners in their fields of expertise.

This degree provides the materials to enhance or develop your career in occupational health, and related areas of psychology and management.
